When people first discover natural perfumery, they are often drawn to the beauty and aroma of essential oils. Yet behind every well-crafted perfume is another important ingredient: the carrier oil.

Carrier oils are plant-based oils used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. In natural perfume making, they help create a safe, balanced and enjoyable fragrance experience.

Because essential oils are highly concentrated, most should not be applied directly to the skin. Carrier oils help disperse these aromatic ingredients while allowing the unique character of each essential oil to shine through.

Different carrier oils also bring different qualities to a perfume. Some are light and absorb quickly, while others provide a richer feel. Popular choices in natural perfumery include jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and grapeseed oil.

Carrier oils can also influence how a perfume feels and performs. A thoughtfully chosen carrier oil helps create a smooth application, supports the fragrance blend and allows the wearer to enjoy the perfume comfortably throughout the day.
