What Are the Marks of True Devotion to God

Devotion to God is a phrase we often hear in Catholic life, but what does it truly mean to be devoted? Is it about frequency of prayer, perfect attendance at Mass, or something deeper?

True devotion is less about outward performance and more about interior transformation. St. Francis de Sales, in his classic Introduction to the Devout Life, says that true devotion "presupposes the love of God" and that it flourishes in daily life, not just in sacred moments.

Marks of true devotion include:

1. Consistency in turning to God, even when we don’t feel like it.

2. Love for God that overflows into love for neighbor.

3. Desire to please God in the small and the hidden.

4. Patience in trials, trusting that God is forming us through them.

We might not always feel holy, but our desire to draw near to Him is itself a sign of grace at work. May we seek a devotion that is humble, persistent, and tender.
